Profiling President Elect Donald Trump

Has Nigel Farage Over-reached Himself with “Delusions of Grandeur” as did Lawrence of Arabia a Century Ago?

WW1: the Arab Uprising: T.E. Lawrence, a latterday celebrity and legend in his time, an Arabic languages student, linguist and Oxford scholar, was recruited by British Intelligence and he ‘went native’ with the Arabian tribes to assist King Faisal in the Arab Uprisings

A double whammy warning from history awaits those that would interfere with due democratic process, the Establishment, its bureaucracy and elected representatives!

British Democracy, Rule of Law, tax collecting and governmental administration aka “The Establishment” are intimately intertwined and together they deal relentlessly with revolutionaries upstarts and those that would meddle  and tinker with the ‘dead hand’ of due bureaucratic process! In such a way it has put down many colonial uprisings and even enslaved and bent continents to its will including in the most recent past!

Lawrence of Arabia was treated very shabbily – especially after WW1 when the British Establishment ‘closed ranks’ on him

Like Icarus, the mythical Greek birdman with wings fastened on by wax and string that melted when it flew too high and hence too close to the sun or too low and hence ecome too damp and heavy from the sea, will a fall from grace await Nigel Farage, or will he face the indifference of the British Establishment? To Nigel, the thought of this will probaly chime with his Anti-European Union ‘red lines’ comment about “likened to being savaged by a dead sheep“!

Trump Declares on his Election: “Let’s Make This Our Independence Day”!

“The Americas” was the one group of British Colonies that revolted by declaring their Independence and is therefore most likely to side with underdog Nigel Farage ‘Boston-Tea-Party-style’ against the UK Establishment!

Is Theresa May in danger of making a grave error of judgement if she underestimates the influence of Nigel Farage in the Trump Administration?

In upholding Democracy has Nigel Farage been hoist by his own Petard?

Hopefully the UK Government will see sense and not behave in a niggardly way towards him as they have towards so many others over the decades and Centuries, including Benjamin Franklin, Charles de Gaulle, Alan Turing .. the list goes on

Is the power of the group the only truly influential force out there capable of changing practices ..

or do individuals and their initiatives still count?

Example of an ivory tower

FT Business and Academia interview video

A most revealling interview about how courses struggle to keep-up with the rapidly changing business world

– we thought we’d reciprocate in response to their sharing the contents of our “Merry Christmas from Scrooge” video!

Merry Christmas from Scrooge?

Practitioners to Academia: get real and come down from your ivory towers?

Academia to Practitioners: but we don’t like your methods!

A victim of its’ own success?

To see our input, just google “hive mind financial ecosystems” and then “behavioural economics”

Cottingham.tv’s Editor has been lobbying for such multi-disciplinary changes to bring psychology and other disciplines into economics, goverment and social working practises proposing such multi-disciplinary approaches across IT including “big data” as an afilliate member of the IEEE SSIT group for over a decade now

-having faced brick walls in local and regional academia, business and finance, it’s good to have some vindication!

– even if it seems recognition is as far off as ever .. or is it?

Why does the market obsess about general industrial social and economic trends and processes as a herd, yet ignore individuals and their unique roles in building successful trail-blazing enterprises and initiatives?

The exceptions always seem to disprove the rules or dictats laid down by academia and business practice that may be blinkering graduates

for every conglomerate there is a Steve Jobs or a Mark Zuckerberg who breaks the established mould!

Perhaps what is interesting to note is that business practices evolve over time and that they are fluid and not set in stone.

The Story of the Lonesome Pine and the Giant Corporation

Or how to go from zero to hero – online

A lonesome pine neon sign in the desert (gettyimages)

Starting from scratch to go to the top of the listings, this is more than a story about neon signs in the desert: how to succeed online

it’s more than just about putting up a website and expecting people to find it ..

If you are new to using the Internet this may come as some consolation:  we know the majority of you who are fifty-plus are new to it and that many more of you are wanting to promote yourselves and your interests online.

Soon another sign followed our lonesome pine .. and another

And a poet soon arrives and before you know it ..

Home for tired aspirational neon signmakers in the desert

And who would have guessed,

they served-up the best!

Nick and his friends decided to provide shade, some lonesome pine entertainmet, rest and serve some refreshments to tired drivers!

Laurel and Hardy: in it to hit it!

Nick got so fed up of telling his life story over and over,

he decided to tell a ryme,

make a film and put it online .. (ouch)

Dive for cover!

For Nick was now about to get out his holiday snaps ..

And tell another    🙂

You also need to get yourself high-up in the search engine rankings in order to be seen

The Americans have an evocative expression for the problem: it’s like putting up a neon sign in the desert!

Fave rave

Google is the primary Internet search engine of choice that everyone uses for most routine enquiries and there are two routes to get the top of page 1. Like most things in life you need money and or much sense to get to the top of the pile! Some things in life (as online) are free but many are not. What started out as a generous and altruistic plan to improve knowledge-sharing by universities between geeky academics soon became commercialised and taken-up by governments. People and business soon followed. Cottingham.tv is also committed to the early spirit of the Internet and likes to inform and provide lots of free stuff online!

google “Google permitted use of logo images”

Some more news and views

66% of us now own a smart phone and for the younger generations it is the must-have accessory. All this information is just a few clicks away online thanks to the likes of Google, unlike in the old days when you would have to trudge down to the council offices and probably also have to visit the County archives in Leeds.

To give you an idea of how much is at stake here – with Google recently agreeing to pay a decade of UK back tax amounting to some £120m, some have said it still only represents a drop in the ocean!

Back to our story ..

During Year 1 we struggled with the main Internet search engine page ratings to climb up the ratings for the keyword “Cottingham”. We are now jockeying for key position with Wikipedia for the keyword Cottingham! For months we were repeatedly hurled back from Page 3 to Page 12 on Google and we got “spammed” with thousands of junk emails, so we decided to discontinue our inbox and let social media take the strain (you can find us on Facebook and Twitter). Some say it’s a war for ratings out there online, as it is in real life. Seeking a new start in a fresh place is like the wild west – hence sometimes it makes sense to be a lonesome pine – and tell a ryme, or two!

We say with hindsight: early set-backs just made us all the more determined. Getting good back-links to tell your story online helps your ratings too and they are the equivalent of references in real life.

You’ve got to be in it to hit it!

We at Cottingham.tv are now in pole position to help others with their search engine promotions online!

Europe 2.0: Great Scott!

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots!

And so it is sadly with today’s politicians, their pundits, commentators (and lecturers): – going to begin this lecture by making some bold mission statements, debunking some historicism and rehashing some old  declarations – and support our retailers: –

But back to the future:

it was assumed that we would have made great strides discovering the ‘governing dynamics’ of the Scientific Universe at least by now – as in “Back To The Future”: –

Finding the 1.21GW required for fictional time travel by DeLorean – but only just in time!!

Time flies like an arrow ..

The DeLorean time machine’s destination date was set to 21st October 2015 Wednesday last week as Back to the Future Day, a time the scriptwriters predicted when we would have discovered and invented gravity-defying hover-boards and time-defying flux capacitors!

In our parallel future however, the 1.21 gigawatts required to power the famous Flux Capacitor is replaced by 14 TeV at CERN today, as the quest for the ‘governing dynamics’ of the universe  (hence providing us with an understanding of Gravity and Time ultimately) a “Theory of Everything” – which still eludes us.

Flux capacitor

.. but fruit flies like a banana!

‘Back to the future’ in the political democratic arena: –

In the political and democratic arena by comparison, there appears to have been be little or no change in managing basic human nature: 21/10/2015 still retains the undemocratic and dystopian economic and political structures that Biff Tannen and his henchmen inevitably created!

Karl Popper echoed this pessimistic view of utopias in his devastating critique of the use of Historicism in the Social and Political Sciences. If you want to have a deeper understanding of politics and economics, you need philosophy too – as well as an understanding of the economics of supply and demand.

So what are the governing dynamics – of government?

Popper asserted we just don’t know and that government by precedent and historical analysis of its constituent social and human sciences is incomplete i.e.  flawed.

One thing is certain however, the future is not inevitable!

Both unpredictable and unexpected things events may take place in government by politics. “Events, dear boy, events”.

In one mechanistic political future; the inventors get the upper hand with discoveries and hover boards make levitation and flux capacitors make time travel possible. In another predicted informatic or technical metaphor future as predicted here; online democracy becomes ubiquitous through online gaming and creates governmental and electoral reform! Technology can and does inevitably change our methods of working and their governance over time.

The quest for a gravity-levitating machine as a device as a mechanistic invention rather than a scientific discovery has not, as far as the editor knows, produced a sustainable lift system; only brief and small changes in an objects weight over short periods. If such a system were to do so, it would have a profound way in which we govern ourselves!

All rise!

The last time the editor researched “gravity drives” along with “perpetual or practicular motion”  was a over decade ago, so things have developed since rotating pairs of gyroscopes on a balance to measure their weight! Perhaps it is also interesting to note that so keen were the Victorians to invent and patent ‘practicular motion’ devices, the Patent Office actually wrote a clause to refuse their submission!

Europe 2.0

  • Europe 2.0 should and could (therefore) be a region and a zone where individuals, groups and Nation States can experiment creatively with participating democracy, constitutional framing, economics and social groupings – not an over-arching bureaucracy where all practices are locked-down and set in stone!
  • Europe should (following on) be thought of as a collection of dynamically-re-configurable systems rather than static immovable bureaucracies
  • In case you were pondering; – “just in time” governance as in manufacturing is not, repeat not the same as dynamic constitutional framing –but  rather, it forms an important sub-set thereof!
  • Back in the days of the early computer pioneer Ada Lovelace, we had punch cards for ‘batch card processed’ production relating to automating weavers looms. Our democracies have however remained set in stone i.e. ‘batch card processed’. This can be referred to as ‘static constitutional framing’. The result is pre-ordained, bureaucratic, exclusive and inflexible
  • Modern computing comprises real-time user interfaces like Windows. ‘Front end’ user-driven screen processes operate  ‘middleware’ business logic to manipulate ‘back end’ data processes to realize their ‘just in time’ governance in production systems – working in ‘real-time’ as “three-tier systems”
  • Take a moment to consider this: a flexible manufacturing system with its distributed economies of production can be compared with a future Europe with its distributed democracies – as a user-friendly computing machine metaphor.
  • A future Europe can therefore be considered to be an aggregate of dynamic economies and dynamic democratic constitutions with dynamic resource allocation!

Europe 2.0: Dynamic Constitutional Framing for Economic Growth: what are the   advantages?

  • Interactive government by eDemocracy as proposed engages electorates through real-time user (hence electorate) participation in online gaming
  • A Europe comprising a collection of dynamically-reconfigurable systems is a Constructionist Europe comprising building blocks, rather like ‘smart social LEGO’
  • Used as an antidote to, rather than a replacement for, elective representative democracy within and between bureaucracies
  • Provides pathways to implementing smarter government aka. electoral reform that will be required to match smarter technology on a country-by-country basis
  • A recipe for economic and social growth
  • Leaving the best until the last: a Super State as so described – namely Europe 2.0 – can maximize the choices available for its ‘end-users’ – namely its electorates – on demand and on an individual by individual basis. The parallel is drawn with modern automobile production where no two cars leaving the production line are necessarily identical as each has been chosen from a wide array of choices available to the individual purchaser: for example body color, engine, model, interior trim and optional extras. No two cars rolling in sequence off the production line are alike.
  • One size no longer has to fit all and we each have the right to govern and be governed by consent as self-determining individuals!

P.S. Update: for a most recent example, The UK House of Lords exercises ‘dynamic constitutional framing’ to defeat the House of Commons in today’s news!

Has the ‘art’ of patient clinical diagnosis been lost in a series of bureaucratic and ‘scientific’ tick-box exercises in our hospitals?

Lincolnshire Trust in Special Measures, BBC July 2014

United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust remains in special measures

Are our overworked physicians (hospital doctors) spending too little time looking at and talking to patients and too much time filling-out forms and carrying out tests blindfolded?

One of the main things that has transformed Medicine in the 20th Century has been the introduction of Scientific Method into medical treatment and diagnosis; another has been the introduction of scientific management practices to manage or rationalize healthcare for all. Examples include budgetary accounting procedures and performance targets and measures including the statistical analysis of hospital patient death rates (see link above).

Put another way: have ‘divide and conquer’ Western clinical methods of diagnosis inadvertently provided a “race to the bottom” in the rush for the mass provision of uniform standardized healthcare?

It has been recently reported that nurses for example have been so rushed by tick-box objectives that they have little time left to talk or respond to patients on an individual ‘holistic’ basis. Ward matrons have been introduced to counter this.

Obituary

Graham McLeod, G8pha 11/1954 – 03/07/2015

Resident of Ryde, Isle of Weight

Eccentric, HF Technical Specialist and Motorcyclist

It was with great sadness I learned Graham had passed away. He was an old school friend and lifelong friend.
He died from organ failure in Southampton General Hospital.
He had a motorcycle-sidecar coffin and I.o.W. biker ride-past funeral organized last week by his sister Shelagh and has been interred on the I.o.W.

Calling G8pha; calling Clod!
We’re sure you will always be out there, as one faint signal buried in our static – and our earths!

We started building crystal radio sets* together after school, which turned into single stage transistor RF amplifier sets and then “superheterodyne” radios with multi-stage RF and IHF amplifier arrays**. Graham was a keen subscriber to “Practical Wireless“, “Practical Electronics” and latterly the more highbrow “Wireless World” and his older brother Alistair provided some guidance. Having a good earth was important for the faint reception – hence his nickname: “Clod of Earth” or just Clod. Having soldered everything together and sat for the first time sat wearing large ex W.O. headphones we listened with bated breath and, with “half wave” wire aerials running over the washing line the length of the garden attached to a shed roof, we just managed to receive BBC Radio and then latterly “Radio 270”, which was a pirate radio broadcasting ship anchored offshore that flooded the airwaves. Actually, 270 meters “on the dial” would have meant that our aerials would have been quarter-wavelength aerials. The “superhet” as mentioned above however allowed us to tune-out all the powerful Radio 270 signal fallout which consumed the whole Medium Wave MW Band.

*Crystals or cats whiskers were replaced with a diode and wound coil with a tuning capacitor salvaged from an old discarded valve radio.

**IHF coils were supplied from Sinclair Radionics of Clacton-on-Sea (to wind and calibrate them oneself to 1.6 MHz would have been to much of a specialist job Graham advised).

Whilst Graham helped me build LF audio valve amps for my brother who was in a rock band, Graham was progressing into VHF receivers and transmitters – and he had joined the local Hull Amateur Radio Society. He became a licensed radio ham. I on the other hand had other friends to impress and “Led Zeppelin 2” had just been released so we needed to fill garages with erm.. lots of neighbourhood noise! Back then no one in the sleepy suburb knew what had hit them!

We thought we had truly discovered the building blocks for the new age of technology and the World was at our feet. There was no technical problem we couldn’t conquer! Digital chips were only just making an appearance with “Schottky TTL ICs”. Building “NAND gates” from discrete components was over-working many problems that could be sorted-out using Analog circuits at the time. He went off to read electrical and electronic engineering at UMIST and we went our separate ways.

The maths proved to be a major stumbling block for both of us at uni, having had 5 different maths teachers at school which left gaps.
Another stumbling block was his knee injury caused by a motorcycle accident from which he never fully recovered. He latterly remarked, commenting on Stephen Hawking’s latest publication this year, I have a better idea: “The Conspiracy Theory of Everything!”

He carried on his interest in HF radio, digital Phase Locked Loop transceiver technology PLL and became a renowned technical specialist working in Oxford on aircraft radio navigation aerials with translation work eventually being offered last year from a German electronics company manufacturing RF measuring and test equipment – “the equivalent of an all-singing, all-dancing AVO-meter – but for RF” he assured me.
