Town and Council Elections

Cottingham North: Councillors Ros Jump and Geraldine Matthiessen re-elected!

Cottingham North

Bucking the overwhelming trend at both the regional and national levels to vote Conservative (hence the ‘hive mind’ Microsoft logo as proposed by the editor) , independents Ros and Geraldine are re-elected as Independents. As former Conservatives, they made a courageous choice to abandon central party diktats and stand to “put Cottingham first”

Cottingham South

The East Riding returned all Conservative candidates, excepting Independents Ros and Geraldine and Labour in Hessle.

Demonstrating the halo effect of adding your promotions on

We have published interviews with Ros and Geraldine (Independents) and Alex Duke and Edward Hart (Labour). Each of those we interviewed said yesterday they did “far better than they expected!”

Labour candidate for Cottingham South Alex Duke and Parliamentary Candidate Edward Hart whom we interviewed previously also improved their votes!

Labour held Hessle (as featured in the video footage),

Nick was delighted to be invited to attend the election count  in Anlaby yesterday (8/5/2015) and he will be uploading video footage over the weekend!

Meeting David Davis at the count to offer congratulations

Whilst being delighted to engage with him and have a rare opportunity to discuss business issues relating to patents and IP infringement briefly when invited, he “Doesn’t do inventions!”

Do you feel let down as an inventor and innovator by governments and financial institutions?

If you have ever struggled with a patented idea and struggled with a business start-up against hostile authorities, we would like to hear from you.

Yes “it does make one feel pretty bloody well pumped-up about it”!

The chicken and egg problem of innovation, finance and patents

Why is East Yorkshire maintained as an ‘Intellectual Property cold spot’?

Did you know that East Yorkshire has long had the lowest number of patent registrations per head of population in the UK! The Government featured my invention for their front cover (check out the link above)!

Let’s hope David Willetts and cabinet colleagues can aim to up their game now in the new regime – or better – shift the blame onto the Liberal Democrats role in the previous regime and make a fresh start in the regions with their non-technical political leaders and sweep away their coterie of jobsworths and special advisors!

Much has changed at the National Level! Heads have rolled!

As other broadcasters said; “Politics is a brutal business!”

Alternative Ways Of Connecting With The Electorate – is like Barrie McKenzie also on a ‘cultural mission’!

Barry ‘singing for his supper’ for John Lennon in a VW camper van: ‘strewth, starve the lizards – I’m so thirsty I could drink out of a Japanese wrestler’s jockstrap!

These are just the introductory-level salvos of a barrage of increasingly irreverent jokes comprising colourful metaphors – used with connect with the audience quick-fire – and make them buy lots of tins of Fosters lager to quench their thirst in the process!

The search for smarter ways to ‘connect with the electorate’!

There must be a ‘third way’ .. psychologically speaking!

Fortunately no one was injured

and we do (still) have ways of making you laugh!

Always Leave Them Laughing

The Psychology of Tommy Cooper

Tommy Cooper’s redeeming quality was his unique ability to connect with the audience (rather than electorate) and thereby let them in on his surprise and amazement when a trick he performed actually worked and humour conversely when it didn’t. Audiences would be engaged in the build-up of the punch line and Tommy’s apparently clumsy clown figure was always far more interesting than the trick – the way it should be with the best comedians and most remarkable people!

He used to practise his well-rehearsed routines in front of a wall rather than a mirror because that enabled him to look past himself into the audience to better engage with them. His clumsiness was however meticulously rehearsed and agile.

In psychology, this is known as building rapport and empathy.

Whether the trick worked or not, we just laughed helplessly!

Do you remember that distant stare of bewilderment into the audience looking for answers when things went wrong? It was as if we were all somehow implicated!

So is there a message? Is there method in the madness?

Answers please to

P.S. Do you know anyone who does a good Tommy Cooper impersonation?  Get in touch! Like the greatest comedians he is almost impossible to impersonate!

As soon as we switched the camera off, he opened-up and gave us a more engaging discussion, so we added this post script!

Editor’s note: –

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Our Conservative Candidates appear to be reluctant to come forward and be interviewed, claiming we’re ‘biased by interviewing the other candidates beforehand’! But we would urge them to come forward and please support us as a local media and technology start-up enterprise which will help the region as a whole become more media savvy, especially with the advent of broadband. Come on guys, aren’t you supposed to be on the side of small business?

Who will you vote for next month?

Why do the political parties continue to steal each others credentials and continue to get it wrong?

Editor’s Comment: In our brave new world of coalitions, surely the Greens should be responsible for representing green issues, Lib Dems for fairness and education, Cons for Business and Enterprise, Lab for equality and employment and UKIP and the others .. well for independence and injecting a modicum of oversight and commonsense at least!

Are the ‘arms-length’ Lib Dem solutions including locations for green technologies simply missing the point – or merely passing the buck by aligning themselves with the Conservatives?

With the early mismanagement of government grants for installing domestic solar panel systems in 2011, we ended up with vast solar farms built by large investors stuck far away from consumers in remote fields instead of on rooftops locally! Thus resulted in a lost opportunity stimulate small businesses like builders and roofers and as a consequence and we ended up with more expensive wind farms located far out to sea and a continued lack if investment in tidal and water flow and wasted opportunities! “More walking the walk and less talking the talk there please Ed!”

To their credit, they recognized the problems with coal-fired power stations, retained overseas aid and famine relief but never really get their heads around carbon capture and storage and ended-up burning straw biomass and green timber sourced thousands of miles away from Canada instead, whilst exporting much of our waste to China as our landfill sites became full to capacity! Again to their credit, recycling has taken off and we do by and large sort our rubbish now, but how much really ends up being processed appropriately? Most is simply bundled up and dumped in landfill sites or sent out to sea in ships – hopefully never to be seen or dealt with again..

One can’t help asking who were the real beneficiaries of these policies favouring large business interests.. which leads us on to ..
